Ototoxicity and Hearing

The effects of Ototoxic medications are well documented* and audiological monitoring of patients during treatment should be routine clinical practice.

Most routine hearing evaluations are conducted between 250Hz and 8000Hz but this range does not alOtotoxic Medicationsways indicate possible detrimental side effects nor provide early warning signals. To see these early effects the literature suggests that high-frequency audiometry can detect hearing reductions earlier,  allowing the physician to make critical decisions.  The Audiology equipment we use at The Hearing Consultancy facilitates extended hi-frequency tests, additionally, otoacoustic emissions testing is also beneficial in detecting early outer hair cell damage that occurs with hearing loss due to ototoxicity
